These two manufacturers dominate the industry by far. Canon has many qualities going for it that makes it very hard for any but the most established makers of film cameras to catch up to. Although a homonym for an explosive weapon, when most people hear the name “Canon”, they soon think of cameras. Canon has been such an established brand name of cameras, lenses and other camera accessories for decades that the public has an easy time believing that they would also make quality digital cameras.

But how come brands like Minolta, Pentax and Olympus, also well known for years for the quality of their film cameras, do not have very popular digital photography cameras with the buying public? Partly, this is due to their price. Canon and Nikon both found a way to make their cameras cheaper and so could sell them at lower prices.
